KASESE: Two juveniles were rescued on Sunday evening after being trapped by flash floods along the Mubuku River, situated between Izinga and Rwakingi I in Maliba Sub-county, Kasese District. The boys, who were grazing goats at the time, found themselves surrounded by rapidly rising waters.
The boys, identified as Mumbere Reagan (12) and Mugume Devis (8), both residents of Kisojo Lower in Mubuku Town Council, had ventured into the river in an attempt to fish when the sudden floods overwhelmed them.
The rescue operation was led by Kasese District Police Commander for Hima Division, SP Nerima Bwire Suzan, and DPC Kasese, SP Bagenda Alfred, who successfully completed the mission around 12:20 AM.
In addition to the rescue, the heavy rains also caused significant damage, including the destruction of Nkoko Bridge in Karusandara Sub-county. This has isolated several communities, cutting off access to essential services such as schools, markets, and health centers.
According to the Uganda Meteorological Authority, under the Ministry of Water and Environment, the Rwenzori Sub-region is expected to experience unpredictable weather patterns in the near future.
SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Region Police spokesperson, expressed his gratitude towards the partners involved in the operation, including the local community members, the District Local Government, and Hima Cement Factory.
He also urged the residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any further weather-related incidents.
