Mogadishu: The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU XI) in Somalia, launched a blood donation campaign on Friday to help boost blood supplies in the mission area.

The initiative kicked off at the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Level 1 Hospital in Mogadishu.

Lt Col Peter Ruyogozya Barigye, Contingent Commander of UNGU XI, described the campaign as a timely humanitarian response to a request from the AUSSOM Level Two Field Hospital, which urgently needed more blood for medical emergencies.

“Your blood can save three lives. That’s three families who get to see their loved ones again,” said Lt Col Barigye. “There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing someone is alive because of you.”

Maj Jacob Gowan Kaburika praised the troops for their selfless contribution, calling it a patriotic act of compassion.

Capt Dr Andrew Namaulula, the Contingent Medical Officer, emphasized the broader mission of peacekeepers.

“Our role extends beyond providing security. Let’s give the gift of life and show what it truly means to wear the uniform.” He said.

The blood drive is part of the UPDF’s ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts aimed at fostering goodwill, supporting local healthcare, and strengthening community ties.
