Parliamentary aspirants in Kisoro District have voiced mixed reactions to the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s decision to raise nomination fees ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Many argue the hike could discourage youth and financially disadvantaged individuals from participating in the political process.

The NRM recently revised nomination fees for various elective positions. The fee for National Chairman has doubled from Shs10 million to Shs20 million, while that for Members of Parliament has increased from Shs 2 million toShs 3 million. Other positions within the party structure have also seen similar adjustments.

Dr. Leo Mfitimana, an aspirant for Kisoro Municipality, criticized the move, noting that it comes at a time when many Ugandans are facing financial hardship. He warned that the increase could limit opportunities for young and aspiring leaders who may lack the means to pay.

Former Kisoro Municipality MP and fellow aspirant Hon. Sam Byibesho warned that the decision may alienate loyal NRM supporters who cannot afford the revised fees. Byibesho argued that the move favors wealthy individuals and risks turning internal party elections into contests of wealth rather than merit and vision.

Commissioner of Police Habyala Fortunate Gatare, who intends to contest the Bufumbira North seat, also criticized the timing of the decision. He noted that the fees were hiked while candidates were already in the electioneering process. However, he said he would not oppose the move, citing his strong support for the party.
