Uganda’s Vice President, Jessica Rose Alupo Epel, recently met with clan leaders from Usuk and Ngariam counties at her residence in Oigo Imomwa, Aketa Parish, Ongongoja Sub-county, Katakwi District.
During the meeting, Alupo expressed gratitude to Simon Ojaman, advisor to the Iteso Cultural Union Elders Council, for his visionary role in uniting the Ateker people.
She commended his initiative in organizing the meeting to inform clan leaders about government programs aimed at reducing poverty at the household and individual levels.
Alupo also thanked the elders for their continued support of the Emorimor (Papa Iteso) and efforts to preserve and promote Iteso culture, noting that every individual has a unique cultural heritage.
She acknowledged the voluntary nature of their work and encouraged them to continue their vital contributions, despite the lack of financial compensation.
Highlighting recent development initiatives in Katakwi, Alupo noted significant improvements in road infrastructure, which have reduced travel time between Katakwi and Soroti from over five hours to just 30 minutes.
She also mentioned the introduction of a ferry on Lake Bisina and the rehabilitation of the Busia-Congo railway line, which will enhance the transport of goods.
The Vice President called for strengthened unity among the Ateker people, particularly between the Iteso and Karamojong communities, despite their historical differences. She pointed out that the ongoing construction of cement factories in Karamoja would create jobs for local residents.
Encouraging the adoption of modern farming practices, Alupo urged clan leaders to promote the rearing of heifers for milk and croilers for egg production as a means of improving household income and food security.
She also stressed the importance of education, urging leaders to advocate for the enrollment of children in school now that educational resources are more accessible in rural areas. Educating children, she said, is key to improving family livelihoods and future opportunities.
Alupo revealed that one of two specialized hospitals planned under a presidential initiative will be constructed in Katakwi District, providing advanced medical care to the local population. She vowed to safeguard the project from being relocated and cautioned against electoral malpractice, including bribery.
As both Vice President and Woman MP for Katakwi District, Alupo concluded by encouraging clan leaders to champion government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Fund, and Women Fund, which aim to boost financial empowerment in local communities.
She also called for peaceful elections in 2026 and urged leaders to promote peace and civic awareness across the district.
