A stray elephant killed a 15-year-old pupil from Kyentija Primary School in Kanungu District in the early hours of Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Clinton Birungi, a resident of Kameme Cell, Kibimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub-county. The tragic incident occurred at around 5:00 AM.
According to police, a mother elephant and its calf strayed from Queen Elizabeth National Park and entered the local community. They attacked the home of Kiiza Robert, destroying his grass-thatched house while the family was sleeping inside.
While most family members remained still, Birungi attempted to flee the collapsing structure. Unfortunately, the elephant struck him, resulting in his death.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that Kihihi Police responded promptly and visited the scene. Maate further noted that the elephant and its calf had been roaming the area for a week before the incident.
Following the attack, wildlife officials successfully drove the animals back into the national park for proper management.
