One person has been confirmed dead and two others injured in a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday along the Kihihi–Rukungiri Road in Kanungu District.
The deceased has been identified as Denis Twebaze, 37, a boda boda rider and resident of Kateramu Cell, Kikonji Parish, Bwambara Sub-county in Rukungiri District. The injured have been identified as Ivan Niwamanya, 25, and Festo Niwagaba, 32, both residents of Buyondo Cell, Northern Ward, Nyamirama Town Council in Kanungu District.
The accident involved two motorcycles: a red Bajaj Boxer with registration number UFW 808N, ridden by Twebaze, and another red Bajaj Boxer, registration number UEP 852E, ridden by Niwamanya.
According to police, Twebaze was riding from Kihihi towards Rukungiri when, upon reaching a location known as Karoni in Nyamirama, he veered out of his lane and collided head-on with the oncoming motorcycle being ridden by Niwamanya, who was traveling from Nyamirama toward Kihihi.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, stated that the accident scene was visited by PC Matanda. The injured were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment, while Twebaze’s body was taken to Nyamirama Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem.
Maate added that a sketch plan was drawn, and both motorcycles were towed and parked at Nyamirama Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
