The Former Makerere University Guild President, Lawrence Alionzi, popularly known as “Dangote,” has officially crossed from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Alionzi also picked up nomination forms, signaling his intent to contest for the position of Mayor of Arua City in the upcoming elections.

Speaking shortly after expressing his interest, Alionzi stated that he wants to be an active participant, not a bystander, in shaping the future of his city.

“I want to be a participant, not a spectator, in determining the direction of Arua. It’s time for young leaders to step up and take charge,” he said.

Alionzi was received by the NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, on Monday. He was accompanied by a group of youth leaders who also defected to the NRM, citing a lack of clear ideology and strategic leadership within the opposition as their reason for the move.

“It is very humbling to see young and educated people join the NRM. The Movement is not something to joke about, it is permanent. It began with our grandfathers, came to us, and now it is time to pass it on to you, our children,” Todwong said.

Also present at the meeting was Hajjat Medina Naham, the NRM Director of Finance and Administration.
