The Rubanda West County Member of Parliament, Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera, has petitioned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) election tribunal, citing widespread irregularities in the recent party primary elections.

In his petition dated July 21, 2025, Kamuntu alleges that the election, in which Bruce Balaba Kabasa was declared the NRM flag bearer, was marred by electoral offences and malpractice, which he claims significantly disadvantaged his candidacy.

Kamuntu says the grounds for his petition include voter bribery, election fraud, violence, intimidation, and other serious irregularities. He accuses Kabasa, through his agents and associates, of openly distributing money during the voting process to influence voters in his favor.

He specifically points to several polling stations, such as Kacerere Trading Centre, Kishanje, Ruhiija Trading Centre, and Ikumba where he alleges bribery and intimidation took place. Kamuntu further claims that only three out of the 471 polling stations were considered during the tallying, despite multiple complaints lodged with the returning officer, which were allegedly ignored.

According to Kamuntu, his polling agents were denied access to polling stations, assaulted, and intimidated. He also alleges they were not permitted to display his campaign posters or vote on his behalf, even though they were present at the polling stations.

He adds that in some areas, his name was not read out by registrars, and in several polling stations, declaration forms never reached the tally centre. As a result, Kamuntu says he is unable to access official results from numerous locations.

He is now calling for the nullification of the election results, arguing that the process was deeply flawed and that NRM members were denied the right to freely choose their preferred candidate.

Kamuntu has asked the NRM election tribunal to overturn Kabasa’s victory and instead declare him the rightful winner of the Rubanda West NRM primary.
