The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is once again engulfed in internal uncertainty as the party struggles to agree on a single presidential flagbearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The party’s presidential race currently features two contenders: the incumbent party president Eng. Patrick Amuriat Oboi and Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, both of whom were duly nominated on May 7, 2025, by the FDC Electoral Commission.
According to a press statement issued on Monday by party spokesperson John Kikonyogo, both aspirants have been traversing the country to rally support from delegates ahead of the National Delegates Conference set for July 31, 2025.
Kikonyogo noted that many party leaders have been advocating for a single consensus candidate to avoid further divisions within the FDC.
“On July 12, 2025, party elders and religious leaders from the Teso and Bugisu sub-regions convened in Mbale City to explore the possibility of fronting a single candidate,” he stated.
“This initiative aims to promote internal unity and prevent further splits, especially considering the party’s history of internal conflicts during past elections.”
He also revealed that a broader consensus-building process is now underway, starting with an expanded elders’ meeting involving representatives from 21 sub-regions. This meeting commenced on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the FDC headquarters.
“We remain hopeful that consensus will be achieved before the National Delegates Conference on July 31, which will be chaired by the Party National Chairman, Hon. Jack Sabiiti,” Kikonyogo said.
“At this conference, the party will officially elect its presidential flagbearer and approve the 2025/2026 general elections budget.”
