The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Richard Todwong on Wednesday welcomed hundreds of historical party cadres back into the fold, as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.

The returning members are former senior cadres who served under the Movement system before Uganda transitioned to a multi-party political system.

Todwong commended their voluntary return, describing them as “energetic and deeply rooted in the communities.”

“These are senior cadres of the party who served under the Movement system. Many retired from official service but have remained active, voluntarily engaging in community work,” Todwong said.

He noted that the historicals expressed concern over recent developments during the party primaries and have now pledged to support the NRM in harmonising its structures at the grassroots.

“They are a force that has come forward to support the party, harmonise our cadreship at the district level, and groom the current leadership, many of whom show ideological weaknesses in appreciating the ideals of the revolution,” Todwong added.

He emphasised the need to integrate these seasoned members into party activities, especially in mobilisation and conflict resolution.

“These are cadres who joined the party out of conviction. They carry the history of the revolution and have made sacrifices. They are determined to ensure that their efforts are not wasted,” he said.

Todwong revealed plans to brief the NRM Chairman, H.E. President Yoweri Museveni, about the development for further guidance on how best to utilise the returning members.

“They are ready to help refocus our grassroots leaders, helping them understand why they hold positions of leadership, and to re-align their mindset towards serving the people,” he added.

On Election Petitions

Commenting on the pending election petitions, Todwong said the party was waiting for the tribunal to announce its verdicts.

“As we’ve always stated, the party secretariat and the electoral commission do not interfere with the tribunal’s work. These are independent bodies, and we too await their decisions,” he noted.

Grooming the Youth

Also speaking at the event, NRM Director for External Affairs, Maj. (Rtd) Pollar Awich, welcomed the historical cadres and praised their willingness to mentor the next generation of leaders.

“Our young people, especially those showing interest in leadership, need proper grooming. These historical cadres, with their wealth of experience and deep understanding of the system, will play a crucial role in nurturing future leaders at all levels, council, district, and national,” Awich said.
