A 35-year-old Conrad Kimonge Tumuheirwe, one of the 36 members of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)–Katonga faction who were deported from Kenya and charged with terrorism, has been nominated to contest for office under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) ticket in Kabale District.

Trouble for the group began on July 22, 2024, when they reportedly left for a week-long leadership and communication training in Kenya. Upon their return, they were deported and slapped with terrorism-related charges.

On Tuesday afternoon, Kabale District Returning Officer, Aisha Nansubuga, officially nominated Kimonge to run for the position of Bugongi Ward LCIV Councilor in Kabale Municipality.

Speaking after his nomination, Kimonge pledged to champion the rule of law and freedom for all. He noted that his arrest only strengthened his resolve to fight for the voiceless, whose rights he said continue to be violated under the current regime.

Kimonge further demanded the unconditional release of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya Lutale, and other political prisoners still incarcerated without trial. He commended Dr. Besigye for his resilience in advocating for constitutionalism, justice, and freedom.
