Police in Kanungu District are investigating two separate road accidents that claimed the lives of two men in less than 48 hours, both attributed to reckless driving and hit-and-run incidents.
The first crash occurred on September 24, 2025, at around 4:00 p.m. at Ibambiro junction along the Ishasha–Rukungiri road. Police say a white Toyota Hilux double cabin, registration number UAW 240Z, knocked a motorcycle, registration UFP 109R Bajaj Boxer, killing the rider, 25-year-old Tumukunde Elian, on the spot.
Tumukunde, a resident of Rwerere in Kihihi Sub County, was reportedly riding from Kibimbiri toward Kihihi when he was struck by the speeding vehicle, which was heading from Ishasha toward Rukungiri. The driver fled the scene and remains on the run. The body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for postmortem, while the motorcycle was impounded at Kihihi Police Station pending inspection.
A day later, on September 25, 2025, another fatal crash was recorded in Kanungu Town along the old Kanungu–Rukungiri road at about 11:40 a.m. Police report that the driver of a Toyota Premio, registration UAV 722W, lost control and rammed into a motorcyclist who was loading boxes of school chalk onto his Bajaj Boxer, registration UFR 730W.
The victim, identified as 39-year-old Turinawe Nestor of Rugoma Cell in Kanungu Town Council, died instantly after the vehicle pushed him into a nearby house. The vehicle and motorcycle were towed to Kanungu Central Police Station for inspection as investigations continue.
In both incidents, police identified reckless driving as the primary cause, and the drivers involved are still at large.
