Police in the North Kyoga Region are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and robbery involving a police motor vehicle, registration number UP 4816 (operating under cover registration UBK 380Q).
The incident occurred on October 28, 2025, at around 1:00 p.m., along the Lira–Alebtong highway near Obot Primary School, Obot A Village, Bar Sub-county, Lira District.
According to police, the complainant SSP Julius Isabirye, attached to the Criminal Investigations Directorate Headquarters and deployed for surveillance during the NUP presidential campaign rally, reported that while on official duty with his driver No. 55181 Sgt. Peter Muhungo, their vehicle was ambushed by a group of NUP supporters led by Geoffrey Unzima alias Tawa and an unidentified accomplice.
The suspects, travelling in a motor vehicle Reg. No. UAN 925Q and a greenish Toyota Drone Reg. No. UA 933AU, allegedly blocked the police vehicle, punctured all four tyres using sharp objects, and robbed the officers of a Dell laptop (worth about UGX 1.5 million), two 20-litre jerricans of diesel, and a bag of personal clothing. They also removed the vehicle’s key chip sensor, rendering it immobile.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the attackers suspected the police vehicle of carrying a jammer device disrupting their online communication.
The vehicle had reportedly been following the campaign trail across several districts, including Manafwa, Namisindwa, Tororo, Busia, Apac, Kwania, Kole, Lira Rural, and Lira City, en route to Alebtong District.
A case of malicious damage and robbery has been registered at Bar Sub-county Police Station under SD Ref: 07/28/10/2025.
So far, 15 suspects travelling in the greenish Toyota Drone have been arrested to aid investigations, and the vehicle has been impounded. Efforts are ongoing to track down the key suspects, Geoffrey Unzima alias Tawa and his accomplice, who remain at large.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga Region, confirmed the incident, noting that police are working to recover the stolen items and identify any other individuals involved in the attack.
“Further updates will be provided as investigations progress,” Okema said.
