Rukungiri Municipality MP Rutahigwa Plans 2031 Return After Stepping Aside for Tumukunde

It should be noted that Dr. Rutahigwa, Councilor Isaac Atukunda, and Andrew Kikira, who all lost to Gen. Tumukunde in the primaries, had initially accused him of voter bribery and intimidation but later withdrew their complaints and chose to back him in the elections slated for January 15, 2026.

The Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, has declared his intention to return to the political race in 2031, following his recent defeat in the 17th July NRM party primaries to Gen. Henry Tumukunde.

Dr. Rutahigwa voluntarily stepped aside to allow Gen. Tumukunde to represent the NRM as the flag bearer in the forthcoming 2026 general elections. He says that the decision was made in the spirit of party unity and continuity, aiming to strengthen the ruling party’s influence and maintain progress on key development projects in Rukungiri Municipality.

He expressed confidence in Gen. Tumukunde’s ability to advance the NRM government’s agenda and effectively implement ongoing projects, including the upgrade of Rukungiri Health Centre IV to hospital status.

Dr. Rutahigwa also emphasized the importance of continued NRM leadership in Rukungiri, urging residents to support the party to sustain development.
