The Ndorwa East Member of Parliament, Honorable Wilfred Niwagaba has called on residents aged 60 to 79 to register and form organised groups so they can benefit from government programmes targeting older persons who currently fall outside mainstream social protection schemes.
While meeting residents of Nyamukyengyere, Rwamakyanka, Nyakihita, Rwantambara, Rwankumba and Nyakibungo in Kitanga Parish, as well as Kyampinga Lower, Kyampinga Upper, Mabungo, Kashaija and Ahakinyahamwe in Ntarabana Parish, Buhara Subcounty on Friday, Niwagaba addressed a persistent concern raised by elders, the feeling of being neglected by existing government assistance programmes.
The elders noted that while the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) programme supports citizens aged 80 and above, many senior citizens below that age bracket continue to struggle without any form of financial assistance.
In response, Niwagaba urged them to work with Community Development Officers (CDOs) at their respective subcounties to register and meet the requirements needed to join government schemes designed for vulnerable older persons between 60 and 79 years.
He emphasised that forming groups is key to attracting support and ensuring that their needs are formally recognised.
Niwagaba, who is seeking another mandate to represent Ndorwa East in the 2026 elections, said addressing gaps in social protection remains one of his priorities, especially for older citizens who feel marginalised.
