The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party leaders in Rukungiri District have urged President Yoweri Museveni to intervene in the arrest of Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, warning that the situation could undermine the party’s prospects in the 2026 general elections.

The appeal was made on Friday during a preparatory meeting for the President’s Campaign trial to the district on 26th November, held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall. Attendees included NRM flag bearers at all levels and district officials.

As members awaited NRM Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda, Asiimwe Jonard Akiiki, resolutions were drafted by District NRM Mobilizer Brian Tumukunde. Key demands included separating NRM District Executive Committee meeting dates from other party gatherings, prioritizing NRM mobilizers over opposition members, timely funding for mobilization activities, greater youth representation and the immediate release of Besigye, a native of Rukungiri Municipality.

Tumukunde expressed concern that Besigye’s arrest is shaping voter sentiment. He revealed that voters especially in Rukungiri Municipality frequently demand his release during campaign rallies, giving opposition candidates an advantage.
