The People’s Front for Freedom has stood in unwavering solidarity with Uganda’s democratic stalwarts, Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale. These figures, whose decades of sacrifice place them firmly within the Council of Eminent Persons, a body representing the enduring conscience of the opposition, have now endured a full year of egregious, state-sanctioned persecution.

This dark chapter began precisely one year ago, on November 16, 2024, with their brazen abduction and illegal rendition from Nairobi, Kenya. This act was not only a crime against two individuals; it was a flagrant violation of international law and a blatant breach of the sovereignty of a neighboring state.

The subsequent legal proceedings have exposed the deep politicization of Uganda’s justice system. Initially paraded before the General Court Martial on November 19, 2024, they were charged with offenses that fall squarely under civilian jurisdiction, a deliberate attempt to weaponize the military judiciary against political dissent, disregarding constitutional principles.

Later, they were arraigned before civilian courts, where state-aligned judges manipulated bail applications and remand periods to keep them detained, a legal pretense that cannot mask the harsh reality: 365 days of arbitrary detention.

“Our leaders are not criminals; they are political prisoners. The arbitrary deprivation of their liberty is an attack on the rule of law, transnational security, and democracy. It is a deliberate effort to stifle dissent and undermine judicial independence,” the People’s Front for Freedom stated on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The party also highlighted the inaction of the Kenyan authorities, saying: “Our petition to the Kenyan High Commission has not been addressed, a clear indication that Kenya is complicit in this fundamental injustice.”

As the 365th day of their detention passes, a year marked by adjournments, amended charge sheets, and delayed bail hearings, the People’s Front for Freedom is using their persecution as a rallying cry for democracy. Besigye and Lutale refuse to yield, standing firm and looking beyond the walls of Luzira.

They are not merely surviving; they are enduring with dignity, using the very system designed to crush them as a stage to expose the fragility of democratic governance and the rule of law in Uganda. Their struggle highlights the executive’s overreach into the judiciary.

Party officials are calling on all pro-democracy forces, civil society organizations, and the international community to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Besigye, Lutale, and all political prisoners.

“Their freedom is non-negotiable; it is a prerequisite for a free and democratic nation,” the statement concluded.
