Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) are set to consider proposals aimed at creating a regional legal framework to govern the use of social media across East African Community (EAC) member states.
This was revealed by the head of the EALA Uganda Chapter delegation, George Odongo, during a press briefing in Kampala.
He said that discussions on a joint social media regulation tool will be among the key items on the agenda of EALA’s second meeting of the 4th session of the fifth assembly, currently underway at the Parliament of Uganda. The sitting runs from 24th November to 4th December 2025.
Odongo said members of the assembly will focus on the “development of a regional policy and a legal framework for the regulation and promotion of responsible use of social media,” noting that the initiative is intended to promote peace and unity among EAC partner states.
“We are therefore here in Kampala, Uganda to conduct our rotational plenary meetings. Rotational meetings in our partner states go a long way in bringing our community closer to our people as well as fostering and deepening our regional integration agenda,” Odongo said.
He further disclosed that the assembly will also prioritise the “adoption and implementation of regional industrialization and value addition frameworks to reduce the export of raw materials,” with the aim of ensuring that producers earn higher returns and broadening the tax base within member states.
In addition, EALA will consider motions relating to the role of harmony in cross-border trade, as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic cooperation and integration within the region.
