The Curate of Kagamba Catholic Parish in Mbarara Diocese, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Asingweire, has condemned the growing practice of children stealing or hastily selling their parents’ property after their death.
Fr. Asingweire made the remarks on Friday during a thanksgiving Mass for Richard Akandwanaho, a Kabale-based journalist, at Kakoki Catholic Church in Bukamba Village, Nyarushenyi Parish, Nyabushenyi Sub County, Ntungamo District.
The thanksgiving event aimed to mobilize support for completing construction works at Kakoki Primary School, where Akandwanaho began his education. The school, which has 222 pupils and 7 teachers, has long struggled with inadequate classroom space. Its temporary structures, in use since the 1980s, were destroyed by heavy winds in 2022.
Fr. Asingweire said it was regrettable that many young people neglect their responsibility to protect their family heritage. He warned that rush decisions to dispose of family property derail development and fuel conflict. He also criticized the culture of blame games, urging communities to focus on self-evaluation and building stronger families.
He encouraged residents to appreciate their roots, contribute to the development of their home areas, and avoid the embarrassment that comes when one dies or becomes incapacitated without having made an impact in the community.
Meanwhile, Akandwanaho appealed to the government to construct staff quarters for teachers who walk long distances to school, saying some trek over 5 kilometers daily, which affects their productivity. He also asked government to help roof buildings constructed by parents in order to improve learning conditions.
Nyabushenyi Sub County District Councillor, Christine Turyamuzaara, said the district has prioritized constructing additional classroom blocks at the school in the 2026/2027 financial year, adding that she would closely follow up the process to ensure delivery.
