Residents of Nyanja Parish in Maziba Sub County, Kabale District, have appealed to Ndorwa East MP Wilfred Niwagaba to address the severe water shortage that has persisted for nearly a decade.

The concern was raised on Thursday as Niwagaba met residents of Kigarama A, Kigarama B, Kigarama C and Kanyakutana at Kigarama Polling Station while campaigning for his 2026 re-election bid.

Herbert Justus, a resident of Kitambi Village, said the water system constructed by the Diocese of Kigezi stopped functioning barely two months after installation, forcing families to pay up to Shs 2,000 per jerrycan for clean water.

He added that most public taps had since dried up, leaving water scarcity as the area’s biggest challenge. He urged the MP and other leaders to urgently intervene by repairing the old system or securing an alternative water source for residents.

In response, MP Niwagaba assured residents that the Shs 48 billion Bugarama–Karweru Piped Water Supply and Sanitation System, launched by government in November, would soon provide a permanent solution to the crisis.

Meanwhile, at Kentare Primary School Polling Station, where residents from Burunga, Mwendo and Mubira gathered to hear his manifesto, PTA Chairperson Josephat Ayebare expressed dissatisfaction with how Kabale District officials planned to spend the Shs 100 million allocated for a new classroom block.

Ayebare noted that the school administration was unhappy with the proposed plan, which allocated funds to construct only one office and one classroom. He described the arrangement as “corruption of the highest order” and requested Niwagaba’s intervention.

In his response, Niwagaba questioned the decision, if confirmed and advised school authorities to demand Bills of Quantities from district officials or formally protest the plan.
