An 85-year-old woman, Bakaturusake Regina, a resident of Nyabubaare Village, was tragically killed on Thursday after being struck by a motorcycle (Reg. No. UFN 071T) while walking with others from a New Year church service along the Kashenyi-Ryeishe feeder road in Bushenyi District.
Police report that she died instantly at the scene.
Authorities suspect that the motorcyclist may have been under the influence of alcohol and fled immediately after the accident.
SP Tayebwa Apollo, the Regional Public Relations Officer for Greater Bushenyi, said law enforcement officers responded promptly, secured the scene, and took the deceased’s body to Kitagata Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.
He added that police are actively working to locate and arrest the suspect and have impounded the motorcycle to aid the investigation.
“Members of the public with any information about the incident are urged to contact the nearest police station. We also remind all road users to strictly observe traffic rules to prevent similar tragedies,” SP Tayebwa said.
