The Rukiga District LC5 chairperson Candidate, Michael Kwarikunda Mbareba, has urged young people to embrace sports as a positive pathway to self-reliance while shunning drug abuse, warning that substance use can ruin their lives and future prospects.
Kwarikunda made the call on Saturday while officiating at a youth conference held at Kitanga Parish in the Kabale Diocese. The conference, which started on Thursday and ends tomorrow, is being held under the theme “Preparation for Marching for Christ and Communication through Sports.”
Kwarikunda noted that in the face of high unemployment levels in Uganda, sports remain one of the few sectors creating employment opportunities for many youths, offering both livelihoods and competitive pay.
He said active participation in sports can help young people become self-reliant and contribute to household incomes.
However, Kwarikunda expressed concern over the rising cases of drug abuse among sportsmen and women, noting that the vice has derailed many promising careers and destroyed futures.
He further cautioned youths against early sexual activity, warning that it exposes them to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
