President Yoweri Museveni has directed the temporary suspension of a village-level exercise reportedly collecting National Identification Numbers (NINs) and personal details in the Kigezi sub-region.

The exercise was being coordinated by Peace Rugambwa, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Agriculture.

The suspension was announced by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, while addressing journalists after a cordial and constructive engagement held at Rushoroza to deliver a message of reconciliation from President Museveni to the leadership of Kabale Catholic Diocese.

The meeting was led by the Vicar General of Kabale Diocese, Msgr. John Vianney Sunday, and was attended by Peace Rugambwa.

According to Tayebwa, the programme was suspended in light of the ongoing election season to avoid misunderstandings, misconceptions, or public suspicion. He noted that the exercise will resume after the elections.

Before its resumption, Tayebwa said that all parties agreed to hold consultative meetings with key stakeholders across different religious denominations to ensure clarity, promote mutual understanding, and encourage community participation.

During the meeting, Rugambwa offered an apology, which was warmly received by the Catholic Diocese.

The engagement reaffirmed the strong working relationship that has long existed between the Catholic Church, President Museveni, and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) across the country.

“During our engagement, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to fighting poverty,” Tayebwa said.

Meanwhile, Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, accused Rugambwa of using her position and financial influence to de-campaign certain leaders and engage in what he termed “uncalled-for political wars.” Kamara called on government agencies to investigate what he described as the misuse of illegally accessed funds to settle personal and political scores.
