The former Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament aspirant Grace Ankunda Bekunda Bwesigye has challenged newly elected leaders in Greater Kabale to actively advocate for the full operationalization of Kabale City.
Ankunda was among seven candidates who contested for the Kabale District Woman MP seat in the recent elections, which were won by Enid Origumisiriza. Others who lost in the race include the incumbent Honorable Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, Trust Kyomugisha, Tracy Ninsiima, Immaculate Kagwa Nyemera, and Rosette Asiimwe.
Kabale was earmarked for city status in 2019, but the timeline was later extended to July 1, 2025, due to delays in the implementation process. Despite this, residents say the city is yet to become fully operational.
Addressing the media on Monday at Tuuza Residence Lounge in Kabale town, Ankunda said the new leadership should prioritize lobbying government to ensure Kabale City becomes functional, noting that city status would spur regional development and improve the living standards of residents.
She also called on the newly elected leaders to foster unity among residents of Greater Kabale, whom she said have been divided by sectarian and religious-based politics, and urged leaders to serve all citizens equally, regardless of religious affiliation.
Ankunda further commended her supporters for rejecting voter bribery, intimidation, and divisive politics during the election period.
