Authorities at Mbarara High School have banned SOSH and PROM activities, replacing them with a well-structured and student-friendly Candidates’ Trip/Picnic in line with new Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines aimed at safeguarding learners.
The decision follows Circular No. 7/2025 dated May 16, 2025, which outlines the safe conduct of entertainment and co-curricular activities for post-primary institutions.
The guidelines emphasize protecting students from inappropriate, exploitative, and unsafe forms of entertainment, particularly those that encourage romantic pairing or imitation of marital relationships during school events.
In a notice signed by Nkurunziza Allan, the Patron Teacher in Charge of Entertainment on Friday, Under the new directive, joint male-female parties commonly referred to as SOSH or PROM have been discontinued.
Nkurunziza clarified that encouraging or allowing learners to pair up or form couples during entertainment events is strictly prohibited under the ministry’s regulations.
In a positive shift, Nkurunziza says the school has introduced a Candidates’ Trip/Picnic, designed to offer candidates a safe, enjoyable, and enriching experience as they prepare to complete their studies.
“The trip for S.4 and S.6 candidates is scheduled for February 20–21, 2026. Each candidate will contribute UGX 120,000 to facilitate the trip, which is intended to promote relaxation, bonding, and personal growth within a controlled and values-based environment”. He stated.
In a communication to parents, Nkurunziza expressed appreciation for their continued support and reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing disciplined, responsible, and all-round students, particularly focusing on the holistic development of the boy child.
