More than 30 independent Members of Parliament have expressed interest in working with the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM, signaling a potential boost in parliamentary cooperation.
The development emerged during a Monday meeting at the NRM headquarters in Nakasero, Kampala, where legislators began signing expressions of interest to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the party.
Speaking at the event, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, who also serves as NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), welcomed the independent MPs and reassured them of their status. She emphasized inclusivity, noting that those aligning with the NRM would gain access to leadership opportunities and key party activities, including the upcoming retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
Among described her role as coordinating independent legislators, referring to herself as the “Dean of Independents,” responsible for ensuring their effective participation in parliamentary work and national development. She revealed that more independent MPs are expected to join, with a formal unveiling of all participating members planned during the Kyankwanzi retreat.
On behalf of NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, National Treasurer Amb. Barbara Nekesa welcomed the legislators, calling the move a step toward national unity and collective action against poverty and underdevelopment. She praised Among for bridging the gap between the party and independent leaders, noting that such efforts would strengthen the NRM’s grassroots presence and national agenda.
Clarifying the process, NRM Director of Legal Services Counsel Enoch Barata emphasized that the documents signed are expressions of interest, not formal party membership. Participation remains voluntary, with only willing MPs included in the arrangement.
