Makerere University has taken a major step toward transforming higher education with the groundbreaking of a new Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) building and the launch of its ODeL Masterplan.
The milestone initiative, supported by KOICA Uganda, is set to strengthen digital learning and position the university as a regional leader in innovative education delivery.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, KOICA Uganda Country Director Jihee Ahn described the development as the beginning of a transformative journey that will elevate Makerere beyond national borders to become a hub for high-quality open and distance learning across Africa.
Representing the Chairperson of Council Lorna Magara, Dr. Silas Ngabirano applauded the partnership, noting that it reflects a shared commitment to advancing education and national development.
He emphasized that the project goes beyond infrastructure, focusing on equipping students, faculty, and staff with skills needed to thrive in a digital era.
On behalf of Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe, Prof. Sarah Ssali highlighted that e-learning is a key priority under the university’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan.
She expressed gratitude to the Republic of Korea for its continued partnership with the Government of Uganda, which made the US$12.2 million grant possible.
Principal Investigator Henry Alinaitwe revealed that the project will focus on three key areas: developing the ODeL Masterplan, enhancing e-learning infrastructure, and building staff capacity.
Of the total funding, US$3.75 million has been allocated to construct the ODeL building over 22 months, with SMS Construction Ltd undertaking the works.
The initiative marks a significant leap forward in expanding access to quality education, reinforcing Makerere University’s commitment to innovation, and preparing learners for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world.
