The Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament, Eddie Kwizera Wa-Gahungu, has expressed concern over ongoing iron ore mining in the area, warning that it could lead to widespread displacement of residents.
Kwizera raised the issue during a meeting with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Francis Mwebesa, in Kampala on Thursday, where they discussed strategies to boost economic development in Bukimbiri County.
Kwizera highlighted tourism and mining as key drivers of growth but stressed the need for government safeguards and fair resettlement for affected communities.
āBukimbiri is richly endowed with minerals, making displacement a particularly sensitive issue that could impact a large section of the population,ā Kwizera noted.
The MP also underscored Bukimbiriās international trade potential, given its proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and called for increased government support to tap into these opportunities.
On infrastructure, Kwizera raised concerns over the poor state of roads in Kisoro District, including Kisoro-Mgahinga and Kisoro-Nteko roads, urging urgent intervention.
He said he will engage the Minister of Works and Transport to explore solutions through forward maintenance.
Kwizera added that these issues will also be presented at the upcoming NRM caucus at State House on Friday, 27th March 2026.
