Authorities in Rubanda District have disbursed over Shs 350 million to support vulnerable groups under various government livelihood programs, in a move aimed at boosting household incomes and strengthening economic empowerment across the district.
The funds were distributed to beneficiaries from all 17 sub-counties during an event held at Rubanda Volcano Hotel on Tuesday. The support targets groups under the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and elderly initiatives.
According to district officials, the funds were allocated as follows: Shs 29.6 million to seven elderly groups, Shs 64.9 million to 17 PWD groups, Shs 57.1 million to 16 youth groups under YLP, and Shs 200.7 million to 37 women groups under UWEP.
Speaking at the function, Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba said that the initiatives are intended to improve livelihoods, promote financial independence, and reduce poverty among vulnerable populations.
Kasyaba expressed concern over rising crime, particularly cattle theft, warning that such acts undermine government efforts to uplift communities.
He, however, highlighted ongoing service delivery improvements, noting that the district has strengthened its health sector by recruiting more health workers and procuring medical equipment for Bufundi Health Centre IV, with plans underway to equip Ruhija Health Centre IV.
Kasyaba also emphasized continued investment in education and infrastructure, urging residents to focus on development.
“Politics is over. let us work together to develop Rubanda District,” he said.
District Chief Administrative Officer Samuel Ahabwe and District Community Development Officer cautioned beneficiaries against misusing the funds, citing poor recovery rates under the youth programme as a key concern.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner Hilary Bindeba assured residents of strengthened security operations, revealing that joint efforts by security agencies, including planned roadblocks, are underway to curb livestock theft.
