The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has endorsed the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Oboth-Oboth, for the position of Speaker of Parliament in the 12th Parliament 2026–2031.
Gen. Muhoozi, who is also the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda-PLU, announced his endorsement in a post on X in the early hours of Friday.
In the post, Muhoozi described Oboth-Oboth as the best-performing minister in government over the past five years and said he was proud to be the first to publicly support his bid for Speaker adding, ‘God bless Hon. Oboth-Oboth.
The endorsement comes just days after Muhoozi signaled that PLU MPs and PLU-leaning legislators would support whoever President Yoweri Museveni endorses for the Speakership.
In a strongly worded post on X on Sunday evening, Muhoozi wrote: “In the battle for Speaker of Parliament, ALL PLU MPs and PLU-leaning MPs will vote for whoever the President and Commander-in-Chief endorses. We shall support Mzee’s position.”
The shift in tone was further reinforced by PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda, who publicly aligned the movement with Muhoozi’s latest guidance, indicating that PLU’s earlier endorsement of Speaker Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa was no longer fixed, but would instead depend on President Museveni’s final position.
