The injured included Javira Mwesigwa, 33, a resident of Bugongi Upper in Kabale Municipality, who was driving the Toyota Corolla involved in the crash. Three other victims also sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
The tragic accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Nyakiharo Village in Bubare Parish, Bubare Sub-county. It involved a Toyota Corolla, registration number UAJ 098V, and a Howo truck, registration numbers RAH 802Q/RL 6749.
According to Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the crash happened when the speeding Howo truck reportedly failed to properly negotiate a corner at Nyakiharo Village, veered into the opposite lane, and violently rammed into the Toyota Corolla.
Maate said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. The severely damaged Toyota Corolla was towed to Rubanda Police Station pending inspection, while the Howo truck remained at the scene by press time awaiting offloading before removal.
Police further revealed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
