Security forces heavily deployed and conducted a thorough search at the Nakasero residence of outgoing Speaker Anita Annet Among.
The unexpected operation comes just days after the Bukedea Woman MP was reportedly directed by top ruling party organs to step aside from contesting for the Speakership of the newly sworn-in 12th Parliament.
Armed police officers, led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and backed by plainclothes intelligence operatives and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), cordoned off entry and exit points around the upscale Nakasero residence, restricting access to the premises.
Authorities have remained tight-lipped about the motive behind the operation. However, political observers have linked the dramatic development to growing tensions within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
However, reports of intense internal pressure forcing her to abandon her speakership bid have exposed apparent divisions within the ruling party hierarchy.
The search at her Nakasero home also comes amid longstanding scrutiny surrounding the NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female). Among has previously faced international sanctions and domestic investigations over allegations of corruption and undisclosed foreign assets—claims she has consistently denied.
By Saturday afternoon, security personnel remained stationed at the residence, while allies of the Bukedea legislator condemned the operation, describing it as an act of political intimidation.
The unfolding developments signal a potentially turbulent beginning to the new parliamentary term, with the political future of one of Uganda’s most influential lawmakers increasingly uncertain.
