Stabex Petrol Station in Kisoro has paid Shs 4 million in compensation to Kisoro-based journalist Mugumya Simon after an attendant mistakenly fueled his Subaru Forester with diesel instead of petrol, causing engine damage.

The compensation followed a consent judgment recorded by the Kisoro Grade One Magistrate’s Court, bringing to an end Civil Suit No. 011 of 2026 between Mugumya Simon and Stabex International Limited.

According to court records, the incident occurred on November 4, 2025, when Mugumya drove his Subaru Forester, registration number UAT 726T, to Stabex Petrol Station in Kisoro to purchase petrol worth Shs 30,000.

It is reported that the station attendant, identified as Betty Uwera, was talking on her mobile phone when Mugumya instructed her to dispense six litres of petrol. Instead, she mistakenly began fueling the vehicle with diesel.

The mistake was discovered by customer service personnel after diesel worth approximately Shs 13,000 had already been dispensed. Although fueling was immediately stopped and a mechanic was called to assess the situation, the vehicle’s engine had reportedly sustained damage.

Mugumya later demanded that Stabex replace the engine, arguing that the damage resulted from the company’s negligence. However, the company declined, prompting him to seek legal redress.

According to the consent judgment delivered on June 25, 2026, before Kisoro Grade One Magistrate’s Court, presided over by His Worship Bob Asiimwe, both parties agreed to settle the matter amicably. Under the agreement, Stabex International Limited paid Mugumya Simon Shs 4 million in full and final settlement of his claim.

The court noted that upon receiving the compensation, the plaintiff waived any further claims against the fuel company arising from the incident. It was also agreed that each party would bear its own legal costs.

The consent judgment was endorsed by Mugumya Simon and counsel representing both parties, formally concluding the case. Speaking after the settlement, Nabassa Rodgers of A. Marvin Company Limited, who represented the complainant’s side, confirmed that both parties had agreed to resolve the matter amicably outside court.

He said the Shs 4 million compensation would help cover the cost of repairing the damaged engine and other expenses incurred during the case.

Nabassa urged fuel companies to ensure that their attendants remain attentive while serving customers, warning that distractions such as mobile phone use can lead to costly mistakes.

He also emphasized that employers are legally responsible for compensating victims for losses arising from employees’ negligence while on duty.
