The Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting research, innovation and higher education, describing knowledge, technology and human capital as the foundation of Uganda’s sustainable economic transformation.
Speaking at the launch of Makerere University’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030 on Thursday, Minister Musasizi said the university’s new roadmap comes at a critical time as Uganda pursues its ambition of expanding the economy tenfold to US$500 billion by 2040.
He commended Makerere University for aligning its strategic priorities with the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV) and the government’s Tenfold Growth Strategy, saying the institution has a key role to play in driving national and global transformation through research and innovation.
Minister Musasizi urged Makerere to strengthen its contribution to government decision-making by producing timely, credible and locally generated policy research and economic models to guide reforms and public investment.
Minister Musasizi pledged continued government support through the Research and Innovations Fund, while encouraging the university to diversify research financing, promote innovation ecosystems, commercialize research findings and deepen collaboration between academia and industry.
He also called on the university leadership to intensify the fight against corruption by fostering integrity among students and staff, warning that corruption continues to undermine service delivery and national development.
