The Kabale District Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Rtd Major Godfrey Katamba has challenged journalists to take advantage of government wealth creation programmes and lead by example in the fight against poverty.

Katamba said journalists are among the first people to access information about government programmes and should therefore be at the forefront of mobilising communities while also benefiting from the available opportunities.

He made the remarks on Monday, July 13, 2026, while presiding over the certificate handover ceremony for the Ndorwa West Journalists Emyooga SACCO held at the Kabale District Commercial Office boardroom.

The SACCO brings together journalists from the eight sub-counties and town councils of Ndorwa West Constituency, including Kitumba, Kamuganguzi, Katuna Town Council, Kibuga, Byakarimira, Rubaya, Kahungye and Butanda.

He urged the journalists to embrace the opportunity, invest wisely and become ambassadors of economic transformation in their communities.

“I therefore flag off the journalists of Ndorwa West to go and work and become role models for others. Government is willing to support people who are ready to work and improve their livelihoods rather than remain in the book of lamentations. We are in the Book of Acts. Use the minds God has given you. President Yoweri Museveni is ready to fund organised groups committed to fighting poverty,” Katamba said.

The RDC commended the founders of the SACCO, led by Chairperson Mbabazi Kakogoso Vanansio, together with the committee and members, for mobilising journalists into a savings and investment group aimed at improving their livelihoods.

He said the initiative could also inspire the younger generation to embrace savings, investment and other development programmes.

Kabale District Emyooga SACCO Manager Rema applauded the journalists for finally organising themselves into a group and pledged continued support to the SACCO.

“We have waited for a long time for journalists to organise themselves into groups, yet the funds have always been available. We are ready to support you every financial year, but financial discipline must remain your priority. Judging from your commitment, you have the potential to become one of the best-performing Emyooga groups in the district,” Rema said.

Kabale District Principal Commercial Officer Erasmus Natumanya also encouraged the journalists to fully utilise the opportunity by actively participating in government programmes through their SACCO.
