Police in Kigezi Region have intensified intelligence-led operations and patrols around schools following reports of alleged kidnappings of learners in the region.
The heightened security follows two incidents reported on Wednesday, according to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime.
One of the reported cases involves Ainemani Oseya, a four-year-old boy who allegedly went missing from St John’s Ikumba Nursery and Primary School in Rubanda District.
The boy was reportedly last seen at about 3pm while at school on Tuesday.
Tumushime said another alleged kidnapping occurred in Kigongi Ward, Central Division, in Kabale Municipality, although the victim was later recovered.
Police are also investigating the alleged kidnapping of a 14-year-old learner in Bubaare Town Council.
“We are still tracing the culprits,” Mr Tumushime said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He said police would continue conducting patrols around schools, boarding facilities and major routes used by learners as part of efforts to enhance their safety.
“We are working closely with school authorities, local leaders and other sister security agencies to verify all reported cases and ensure the safety of our children,” he said.
Police urged parents to ensure children travel in groups and promptly report suspicious people around schools.
School administrators were also asked to strengthen access controls and report strangers found on school premises.
Tumushime further appealed to boda boda riders and members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the investigations.
At the same time, he cautioned the public against spreading false alarms about alleged kidnappings, saying those found responsible would be arrested and prosecuted.
“We want to reassure parents and school administrators that the safety and security of our learners remain our top priority,” Tumushime said.
