Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, the current Commander of Land Forces in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), is emerging as a possible successor to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), following Muhoozi’s announcement that his time at the helm of the military is nearing its end.

Muhanga, who is the older brother of journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda, is among the names that could feature prominently in discussions about who takes over the country’s top military command should Muhoozi formally leave the position.

Earlier on Friday, November 6, 2026, Muhoozi took to his X account and announced that he would soon step down from the office, which he described as a position God had given him.

He indicated that he was looking forward to handing over the responsibility to another qualified UPDF officer, while expressing his intention to dedicate the next chapter of his life to Jesus Christ.

Although the CDF did not announce a specific departure date or name his preferred successor, his remarks have triggered speculation about the future leadership of the UPDF and the possibility of a major military transition.

Muhanga’s position as Commander of Land Forces places him among the senior military officers whose names could attract attention in any succession discussions. However, there has been no official announcement identifying him as Muhoozi’s replacement.

His possible elevation would depend on the formal appointment process and the decisions of the appointing authority.

Muhoozi’s announcement has also reignited debate about his political future, particularly against the background of his association with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), whose supporters have openly promoted his possible presidential ambitions.

His departure from the military, if formally confirmed, could open a new chapter in his political career, although he has not explicitly declared a presidential bid in the latest statement.

The prospect of a new CDF comes at a politically sensitive time as attention increasingly turns to the 2031 general elections and Muhoozi’s potential ambitions beyond military service.

For now, Muhanga remains Commander of Land Forces, while the UPDF has not officially confirmed any changes to the country’s top military leadership.
