KAMPALA – Minister of Security, Rtd Maj General Jim Muhwezi has blamed the pervasive corruption in Uganda to witnesses’ reluctance to testify in court against corrupt suspects.
He emphasizes that while the government has established numerous anti-corruption institutions, the challenge persists due to a lack of cooperation from the public in providing essential evidence during investigations.
Addressing concerns raised by Members of Parliament on the Presidential Affairs Committee, Muhwezi acknowledges the widespread nature of corruption and highlights the reluctance of individuals to report and testify.
He stresses the need for a comprehensive approach to combat this societal issue, noting that corruption extends beyond public officers to private engagements.
In response, Rose Obigah, Terego Woman Member of Parliament, urges State House officials to refrain from downplaying corruption and advocates for more stringent measures.
She suggests adopting punitive actions, even proposing the firing squad for those found guilty of corruption, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the escalating problem.
