KAMPALA – The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt Hon Anitah Annet Among, disclosed that some confirmed attendees of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSCOP) opted not to participate due to Uganda’s enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023.

“We had Speakers who hesitated to join because of the legislation we passed. It’s essential to note that we don’t harm individuals based on their sexual orientation. Our acceptance is not compromised; we uphold the laws we’ve enacted, respecting our values and traditions,” stated Among.

During the official opening ceremony, Speaker Among shared that 33 out of the 43 initially confirmed Speakers attended the conference.

In her closing remarks at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo today, she commended those Speakers who chose to attend despite external pressure, expressing gratitude for their courageous decision.
