KAMPALA – In the December 2023 annual audit report, Auditor General John Muwanga revealed that, out of the 34,000 cancer cases reported at the Uganda Cancer Institute in 2023, only 5,071 patients received treatment.

The Value for Money Audit Report on the Provision of Super Specialised Oncology Services by the Institute highlighted that UCI treated only 14% of the new cancer cases, and it lacked data on patients seeking treatment elsewhere.

Additionally, the Auditor General expressed concern about the insufficient funds allocated to the Uganda Cancer Institute.

Over the past six financial years (2017/2018 to 2022/23), the government released only Shs407.98Bn for the institute’s operations.
