NTUNGAMO: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) has closed down six unlicensed agro-chemical shops as part of a comprehensive operation aimed at enforcing regulations governing their operations in Ntungamo district.
Fred Muzira, a senior Agriculture inspector representing MAAIF, spearheaded the operation alongside law enforcement officials yesterday, resulting in the closure of the unlicensed establishments. Muzila emphasized that the seal locks placed on these shops would only be removed upon compliance with necessary permits and adherence to specified requirements and conditions.
He expressed astonishment at discovering that some agro-chemical shops operated by agricultural officers lacked proper licensing, while others were staffed by unskilled personnel, cautioning them against potential legal repercussions.
Muzira outlined plans to escalate enforcement efforts across various areas including Rubaare, Rwentobo, Rwashamaire, Nyamukana, Kitwe, and Kafunjo. He urged input dealers to seize the opportunity during this grace period to obtain necessary documentation from the district agricultural office in Ntungamo, enabling them to operate legitimately. Additionally, he implored farmers to refrain from purchasing inputs from unauthorized dealers.

The district agricultural officer, Esther Atwiine, emphasized that despite numerous sensitization workshops conducted on the matter, agrochemical dealers have displayed reluctance to comply with regulations.
