KANUNGU – Two lives were tragically lost, and nine individuals sustained injuries in a fatal accident at Ahakatindo Karuhanga in Rutenga along the Kanungu-Kabale road in Kanungu district.
The incident, which occurred around 10:00 PM yesterday, involved a white Isuzu with registration no UBM 878R. The driver is currently at large.
The deceased, identified as Tumwebaze Vanice (60) and Atuheire Mary (45), were joined by the injured victims that include Musinguzi Amos (25), Twinamatsiko Joshua (25), Kanyesigye Medard (35), Musinguzi Edison (34), Asiimwe Monica (29), Tumuhimbise Gabriel (36), Namanya Promise (21), Obedi (18), and Dick (17), all residents of Kanungu District.
According to a police statement, the Isuzu was traveling from Kanungu towards Kabale when the driver lost control at Ahakatindo Karuhanga in Rutenga.
The vehicle veered off the road, overturning downhill several times, resulting in the tragic deaths of two female adults and critical injuries to nine others.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, reported that the police were promptly alerted, and the scene was visited by Sgt Ndyanabo, assisted by PC Kifunte.
The injured victims were swiftly transported to Katate Health Centre IV for treatment.
Maate mentioned that the motor vehicle remains at the scene, pending towing to the police for IOV inspection.
The bodies of the deceased have been delivered to Katate Health Center IV Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
