The accident occurred on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at approximately 9:10 AM in Nyamushungwa Village, Mabungo Parish, along the Nyarusiza-Kisoro road. It involved a green MAN trailer with registration number UBE 524E/UBE 018K and a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number UFM 860S.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, identified the deceased as Shangari Robert, 56, a resident of Buzeyi Village, Nyarusiza Sub County, Kisoro District.
Shangari was a passenger on the motorcycle. The injured individual, Ribakare Joseph, 60, who was the rider, is also a resident of Buzeyi Village.
According to Maate, the motorcycle was traveling from Nyarusiza to Kisoro town when it encountered an oncoming trailer on a narrow section of the road in Nyamushungwa Village.
“While attempting to pass on the side, the motorcyclist lost control, colliding with the rear tire of the trailer and falling beneath it”. Maate noted.
He said that Police were alerted to the scene, where they conducted a preliminary investigation.
“The injured rider was taken to Kisoro Hospital for treatment, and the deceased’s body was transported to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination”. Maate said.
He said that both the motorcycle and the trailer were towed to Kisoro Central Police Station, pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).
