RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old mentally ill taxi conductor in a hit-and-run accident along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo Road.
The deceased, identified as Akankwasa Bruce, hailed from Marumba B in Kanyinya Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality. He tragically lost his life around 10:28 AM today after being struck by an unidentified vehicle at Kabingo Cell, Eastern Ward, Kebisoni Town Council in Rukungiri District.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, revealed that Bruce had gone missing from his home in Marumba B cells the previous evening, attributed to his mental health condition as claimed by relatives.
Maate explained that an unknown speeding vehicle from Rwashamire towards Kebisoni Town Council fatally hit him in the middle of the road.
The police spokesperson further stated that the incident’s scene was promptly attended to by law enforcement, and the body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Center mortuary for postmortem examination.
