RUKUNGIRI: One person has been confirmed dead, and another injured in a road accident that occurred on Friday in Nyakibale Kanyinya cell along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road in Rukungiri District.

The deceased has been identified as Furugense Byamukama, 62, a peasant and resident of Kanyabizo cell, Ntungwa Parish, Nyamirama Sub County, Kanungu District. The injured victim is Dukuviki Byamukama, 50, a businessman from Kibirizi Kanyinya cell, Ndorero in Rukungiri District.

The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace (registration number UAZ 851S), driven by Muminu Bukenya, a resident of Rukungiri who is currently on the run, and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration number UEX 152F) ridden by Byamukama, who is currently admitted at Nyakibale Hospital in Rukungiri District.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, the collision between the motor vehicle and motorcycle led to the accident. Maate stated that the scene was visited and documented, the victim was rushed to Nyakibale Hospital in critical condition, and the body of the deceased was taken to Nyakibale mortuary for a postmortem.

Both the vehicle and motorcycle have been impounded at Rukungiri Central Police Station pending inspection. Maate attributed the accident to reckless riding by the motorcycle rider.
