One person has died and five others were left critically injured in a road accident that occurred along the Kisoro–Kabale road in Kisoro District on Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Meble Mukagurasi, a woman in her 60s and resident of Ruburi Village, Kagezi Parish in Kanaba Sub County, Bufumbira East Constituency.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened at a sharp corner in Nyamatembe Village, Muhindura Parish, when a Toyota Ipsum (registration number AUZ 185L) veered off the road and overturned.
The vehicle, which had reportedly been donated by Bufumbira East MP, Hon. Dr. James Nsababuturo, for use as an ambulance in Kanaba Sub County, is suspected to have been speeding at the time of the crash.
The car was transporting six people, including Mukagurasi, who was being rushed to St. Francis Mutorele Hospital for treatment of another illness.
Others on board included three women, one man, and the driver, who was accompanying the group for medical attention.
Eyewitnesses say the driver, identified as Ezra Mariyamungu, fled the scene immediately after the crash. Good Samaritans rushed the injured to St. Francis Mutorele Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
By press time, police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
