Police in the Kigezi Sub-region have cautioned drivers against reckless driving and over-speeding following a single minor road crash involving a Gateway Bus Company bus along the Kabale–Mbarara Highway.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at around 2:00am at Kabaraga in Kabale District. The bus, registration number UBE 977S, was involved in the crash. Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries were immediately reported.
Police said traffic officers swiftly responded to the scene and secured the area following the incident. Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving was the likely cause of the crash.
The Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, urged bus drivers to prioritize passenger safety by exercising discipline while on the road. He advised drivers to get adequate rest to avoid fatigue, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and strictly observe traffic regulations to prevent accidents.
Tumushime emphasized that public transport operators carry a huge responsibility of protecting the lives of passengers and called for increased vigilance, especially during night travel when poor visibility and driver fatigue can contribute to road crashes.
