KYENJOJO: At least ten people have died in an accident along the Fort Portal highway in Kyenjojo District.
SP Michael Kananura, the PRO for traffic, confirmed the accident, stating that a road crash occurred on August 28, 2024, at approximately 4:00 a.m. at Kaihura along the Fort Portal highway, resulting in the loss of ten lives.
Kananura reported that the crash involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBE 807T, belonging to Pokopoko Company, and a Toyota Hiace, registration number UBR 812G.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the Toyota Hiace driver, whose usual route was the Mbarara-Ntungamo-Kabale road, had been hired to transport mourners from Ntungamo to Kyenjojo for a burial,” Kananura said.
He added that the driver had been operating the vehicle continuously without rest, both day and night, and was unfamiliar with the terrain.
“The vehicle veered out of its lane at Kaihura and collided head-on with the oncoming bus,” he said.
Kananura noted that “the impact resulted in the tragic loss of ten lives, including the driver, all of whom were passengers in the Toyota Hiace.”
He confirmed that the bodies have been transported to Kyenjojo Hospital for post-mortem examinations, and the vehicles have been towed to the station for further investigation.
