Three people died and four others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash involving a Toyota Hiace, registration number UA 20121AA, and a crossing elephant in Murchison Falls National Park.
The accident occurred on the night of May 24, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m. along the Arua Road within the national park in Nwoya District.
According to preliminary investigations, the Toyota Hiace, which was carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority, was travelling from Arua City to Kampala after official duty when it knocked a crossing elephant. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle following the collision, resulting in the deaths of three occupants on the spot. Four others, including the driver, sustained injuries.
Police responded swiftly to the scene and rushed the injured victims to Kiryandongo Hospital for medical treatment before they were later transferred to Kampala for further management.
The Community Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer in the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, Michael Kananura, confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
“Motorists are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially during night hours, and to strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents,” SP Kananura said.
