Rev. Fr. Mubangizi Urges Christians to Plant Hass Avocados for Economic Growth in Kisoro

KISORO: The Parish Priest of Nyagisozi in Mutolere Deanery, Kabale Diocese, Rev. Fr. Leopold Mubangizi, has encouraged Christians in Kisoro District to embrace the planting of Hass avocados to boost their household income.

Fr. Mubangizi made this appeal on Monday following a request to the State Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Sarah Mateeke Nyirabashitsi, to consider Christians from Nyagisozi Parish in Nyarubuye Sub County during the registration exercise for the donation of Hass avocado seedlings to residents in Kinanira Parish, Busanza Sub County.

According to Fr. Mubangizi, planting Hass avocados can significantly enhance household income and help combat poverty.

However, Minister Mateeke cautioned Christians not to focus solely on planting Hass avocados, as they take time to mature, which could lead to food shortages. She urged residents to also engage in other income-generating activities.

Hass avocados mature after two years, and a single mature tree can produce over 3,000 fruits with proper agronomic management practices. An acre requires a maximum of 166 trees, with a planting spacing of 6×4 meters, and the estimated production is over 450,000 fruits. Currently, one kilogram of Hass avocados is priced at 7,200 UGX.
